Q: Can anyone learn to improvise?

A: Yes. Any student with the basic ability to play an instrument can learn to improvise. The Music as a Second Language program guarantees that students will be playing their own improvised solos within the very first one-hour class.

Q: How much prior experience is necessary?

A: At least one year of experience is necessary on one’s instrument before taking the program. Potential students should be able to play a chromatic scale in a one-octave range. The ability to read notated music is not required.

Q: How much practice is necessary?

A: Music as a Second Language recommends practicing the course material at least three times per week for 30 minutes each practice period. This is in addition to any other practicing the player already does.

Q: Will Music as a Second Language interfere with my classical music training?

A: No. In fact, the program will likely enhance it. Music as a Second Language emphasizes the mastery of scales and arpeggios and the development of a strong tone. It builds technical and theoretical skills which are an asset to any classical musician.

Q: Where are you located?

A: Our studio is located at 842 Yonge Street, suite 200 in downtown Toronto . We are one block north of Bloor Street and are steps away from the Yonge/Bloor subway station.

Q: Is parking available at the studio?

A: No. However, street parking is available on the neighbouring side streets.

Q: Does the studio provide instruments?

A: The studio provides the following instruments: drum kit, piano, guitar amplifiers, bass amplifiers, vocal amplifiers, and vocal microphone. All other instruments must be brought by the students themselves.
