The Jams

The Music as a Second Language jams provide an open and friendly environment for musicians to come together and play. Every week, musicians of all skill levels connect to create music in a fun and informal way. The result is always original and eclectic!

If you’ve never jammed with other musicians before, don’t be afraid! A 'jam leader' is present at every jam to help newcomers play music in this way. Whether you are a classical pianist or a casual singer, the jam leader will help you contribute your individual talents to the overall sound of the group.

The jams are a mix of well-known songs and freestyle jamming. For each jam, two well-known songs in the genres of rock and pop are announced. Some past examples include “Sweet Home Alabama” by Lynyrd Skynyrd and “Rolling in the Deep” by Adele. The group plays through the songs together, and then uses the structure of the song as a base for experimentation. Freestyle jamming also occurs, in which players collectively create music from scratch. A guitar riff will be introduced, a bass line added, a drum beat laid down, and a saxophone solo played on top.

The studio provides the following equipment: drum kit, piano, keyboard, vocal microphones and amplifiers for vocals, guitar, bass, and keyboard. All other instruments must be brought by the musicians themselves.

If your have song requests for the next jam, please email them to info@mslmusic.ca. For all other news relating to Music as a Second Language, please see our blog.
